Wine Controls not Setting
Mar 18th, 2015 at 5:07pm
Print Post Print Post
I'm running the game on Linux through Wine. I looked at the support:

http://www.avpunknown.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1398700405

I know, there's not really any Wine support here, but maybe I could find a clue as to how to fix it.

I installed the Online Multiplayer patch, but I can't seem to set the controls. They set in the Shared fine, but the Alien, Predator, and Human controls turn to <unassigned> when I change away from their menu. The controls don't work in-game at all, not even the mouse, and the controls often reset to <unassigned>. Saving and loading profiles doesn't help.

In the profile text file it shows strange assignments, is this correct? (WASD):

[Shared]
Fire = " @##3@ "
AltFire = " @##4@ "
Forward = "##17@ @ "
Backward = "##31@ @ "
Left = "##203@ @ "
Right = "##205@ @ "
StrafeLeft = "##30@ @ "
StrafeRight = "##32@ @ "
Strafe = "##37@ @ "

****EDIT: FIX --> http://www.avpunknown.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1426698445/11#11

Hmmm, I had avp2 on linux for a few years... ran into no problems.

What Distro do you use? and what version of wine?

Also that 'link' you posted was just for the AVP2 Server Binary file.

I encountered this problem in the past. if all the controls are not assigned and restores default option is not available. the problem is usually due to the language of the keyboard to the keyboard system.
the game is installed in that language?
I solved simply by installing the game. to restore the default settings.
start the game in single player mode once in single player should be able to restore the default options for the keyboard.

Wow, I didn't expect other Wine users!

*Distro: Slackware 14.1 with 32-bit compatibility libraries
*Wine-1.7.21
*Wine-1.3.35: Runs AvP2 unusably slow for some reason.
*Hardware:
Intel Core i5-4670 CPU @ 3.40GHz
VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Haswell Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 06)
     Subsystem: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd Device d000
     Kernel driver in use: i915
     Kernel modules: i915
HD Graphics 4600
Shader Model 5.0
OpenGL 3.3 on Linux
OpenCL 1.2 Support
Hardware Acceleration
     Intel Clear Video HD (CVT HD)
     Intel Quick Sync Video (QSV)

Dynamic Video Memory Technology (Unlisted MB)
RAM: 8 GB
HDD: 1 TB

Keyboard: Logitech G11 Gaming Keyboard, British Layout

*I've tried resetting to default, but it didn't help and didn't do anything. I tried single-player many times, even changing settings while in-game.

That link also contained links to Wine AppDB and a thread at GamersOnLinux, which was what I really meant.

I added winetricks d3dx9_36 and directmusic because of startup crashes (directmusic was really the one that fixed it).

So the game runs fine, just the keyboard always 'resets it self' ??

What about you use an older version of wine that still is 'stable' with avp2 because i ran avp2 on an old version did had some issues, but the keyboard error was never there.

Try an older version first that works 'smooth' with AVP2.

Then get back to me,

(it will be difficult to help as im not on linux at the moment.. but i'll give it a shot! lol)

- Let me know

Good Luck.

That version (1.3.35) is actually the older stable one I tried, mentioned to work for many. It seems I can't even try any older than that because it no longer compiles due to incompatibilities with old libraries.

The fact that it does this on 2 very different versions, with a wide myriad of options, likely means it may not be the wine version. The most I get on the terminal while setting controls is this constantly and a lot:

I've tested and even if the settings do stick in the options during the game, I still can't move or do anything.

Could it be that the game itself is not configuring or finding something properly? Again, the mouse and keys work fine in the menus, just not in gameplay. Maybe the data is slightly corrupt; I did see a small scratch on the edge of one of the disks, and they are pretty old.

But the only way I know to check all the data is to use Hashdeep, but that means one of you is willing? The command on Linux would be:

md5deep -lrW md5sumr.md5 ./*

I guess on Windows that would be +options instead.

Want to chime in here and say im having the exact same issue on Win7 64 bit.

A few days ago my control and video setting all keep resetting to strange things like the OP, changing them is useless, they all reset on next launch.

Something is causing default.prf in the profile folder and autoexec.cfg to be ignored in favor of some other values. Removing both of these files and creating new ones from scratch does nothing, they keep defaulting to values from some unknown file.

Edit: Anything you set in default.prf and autoexec seem to be ignored except "windowed" "1". For example in autoexec any custom resolution will be ignored.

That is indeed... very odd (I'm running AVP2 on Windows 7 Ultimate X64 Edition)

No problems here...

So you're saying it automatically resets the values then ? hmmm

I've seen this mistake many times usually occurs when trying to update the game installed in a different language or a corrupted version whidouth expansion.
give an example I have windows 64-bit so & keyboard are Italian.
I have seen this error in past when I installed AVP2 in Italian
after installing the update in order 1.0.9.6 ita, the singleplayer map update 1 en, multiplayer map update 1 en, old 2.0 master server.(whidouth ph)
if you try to configure the keyboard all commands are written with <unassigned>.
botton restores default values result Unselectable.
try uninstalling everything and install in a different language.
council installs primal hunt contains updates sp1 and mp1 (inside setup in same lenguage)
try to start game and disable triple buffering and mause hardware acelleration.
to start the game in single player restore the default commands.
also try to change the sensitivity of the mause from menu of the game and restore default too.

direct dowload italian version original disks

https://mega.co.nz/#F!14gmzSzZ!bhiSEYXkZ01utHNCIHUBVQ

torrent full eng version pirate including cracks no cd

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3n28sBr7mbvVG1Rb01KbGlZV0E/view?usp=sharing

I hope you can solve your problem a hamburger & wine

Thanks for all the replies. I kept trying for a while but gave up.

Now I downloaded the direct download version in italian, and everything installed well. The controls now set properly but now none of the player modes work. Single-player freezes while loading (no terminal output). Multiplayer gives the following:

"Disconnected: Your world version is different from the server."

I installed everything to the letter:

Patch: avp2_en_096
Maps: avp2_en_sp1
Maps: avp2_en_mp1
Master Server Patch: avp2smsinstall_2.1
Maps: Ultimate Mappack 2 (UMP2 in main directory)

This is mad, because before, I connected just fine to both, but had no controls.

The only thing left to try is a copy-and-paste of the whole Aliens vs. Predator 2 directory that you know works. It's primitive, but at least then I can run some checksums on what's wrong and what's right. So far, hardly anything matches from my disk install and your italian install.

do not paste nothing!
ok now controls work this is good.
now i suggest to unistall game & expansion italian version from control pannel.
english version its more stable then italian (for now).
after unistall delete root called fox restart pc for make a clean installation of game & expansion in english lenguage.
raccomanded use default root dont change during setup.
after restart proceed to install avp2 en  (disk1&disk2),
install 1.0.9.6 update, install primal hunt en (ph disk)
Tip check crack no cd before install sms multiplayer updates
replace crack no cd for game and expansion .
open game first time whidouth multiplayers updates,
insde spash screen  select opzion and disable triple buffering, and hardware cursor . (click ok for save)
open display and set  resolution .
now click play and start game  first runn game ask to  grafic detail ,select max detail and start game
when  game its open look if all commands are default.
quit from menu for save and close corectly game.
do the same procedure for primal hunt.
proceed to install multiplayers updates.
install sms 2.1 (for avp2) , install phsms 1.0.0 (for ph) ,
read this old topic about sms 1.0.0 beta for ph.
http://www.avpunknown.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1397829570
note: insde ph you have already sp1 en and mp1 en as a update for main game avp2 in the same language of the disc
insde sms 1.0.0 beta setup you have old avp2 client exe connector v 0.4.7 (usually located in ph root) but now last version its 0.4.8.
laster version avanable here:
http://www.tbbcbase.net/files/AvP2Client.exe
avp2 client exe it's a server browser and chat tool for those who feel the need. You can also use the web chat located on the server list page.
i want advise some avp2 servers have old ms 2.0 some have 2.1
if you have problem to dowload old ms 2.0 from avpunkow
i have make a backup here dowload:
https://mega.co.nz/#!Q55DVKJD!eIMM71KYBgFkNKALwW0QGGaOtrO5iSB8R5P1jaqKlns
I suggest you keep on your desktop either version 2.0 that 2.1
in order to be able to enter insde new and old servers.
I know that this procedure is rudimentary but let me know if you solve your problem & good luck
p.s
if you try old primal hunt dont forgotte to close expansion before join in a normal server of avp2 or server will ban you automatly.

I FIXED it!

It was a really simple fix, but it couldn't be fixed without looking at someone else's files. The problem is that the autoexec.cfg isn't being written properly. The CORRECT autoexec.cfg file should look this (copy and paste, and then you can edit it in-game):

Note: The controls will work properly and stay, but just in case, you can also remove write permissions to the autoexec.cfg file after you set it up right.

Now I just have the other issue of distorted sound, but that's been reported before many times.

P.S. Give Imp Hunter (above) a message about it being fixed pls, since I can't yet.

I FIXED it!

It was a really simple fix

good! tell me you are a programmer ?

if not mistaken wine comes from windows 95.

if you have problems of sound distortion I have a theory that regards the method of reading the old CD rom and the method of the buffer used by the old directx.

about dirext sound wiki say:

DirectSound: interfaces with the sound card for playback and recording of sound effects. Supports positional audio (which simulates the spatial sound in 3D).
Sounds can be modified by effects from different input buffer (Secondary Buffers Sound), after which they are mixed together in the only output buffer (Primary Sound Buffer). The input buffer can be static (from file) or dynamic (stream from a microphone, etc ...) and their quantity depends only on the computational power of the computer. DirectSound you can lean on the capabilities of the sound card, in the case supports the required effects. Three effects are the volume, EQ, panning, reverb, distortion, various three-dimensional effects and simulation of the Doppler effect.

about dirext x wiki say:

Originally intended for the developers of video games, DirectX have become very used also by industries in other kinds of software. For example, Direct3D is increasingly popular in engineering, with the ability to quickly render 3D graphics of high quality, using the latest 3D video cards.

In 1994, Microsoft was about to release the new operating system - Windows 95. The main factor that would determine the user rating for this new operating system would be such programs could have been run on machines that used it. Microsoft was concerned, because programmers tended to see the previous Microsoft operating system, DOS, as the best platform for game programming, which meant that few games would be developed for Windows 95 and the operating system would not have been very successful.

DOS allowed direct access to video cards, keyboards and mice, sound devices and all other parts of the operating system, while Windows 95, with its new model plug-and-play, limited the access to all these devices, working on a more standardized model. Microsoft needed a way to provide programmers what they wanted, and now, since the operating system was a few months from release. Microsoft began developing internally a graphics API starting towards the end of 1994, but after many months Microsoft decided that the time was not sufficient to enable it to create from scratch the API. In February 1995, Microsoft made the decision to acquire British 3D Rendermorphics including its laboratory API, 3D graphics API Reality Lab, risviluppando the API that was called DirectX.

The first version of DirectX was released in September 1995 under the name of the Windows Games SDK. It was the Win32 API that would replace the API insufficient born and bad for the Win16 operating system (DCI and WinG). The development of DirectX was followed by the team of Craig Eisler (project manager), Alex St. John (Evangelist), and Eric Engstrom (program manager). Simply stated, allowed all versions of Microsoft Windows, starting with Windows 95, to incorporate high quality multimedia.

Before the existence of DirectX, Microsoft had already included OpenGL on their Windows NT platform. At that time, OpenGL required high level of hardware and was limited to use engineering and CAD. Direct3D would have to be a little help for OpenGL-oriented games. With the growth of the power of video cards and computers they run on, OpenGL became the mainstream. At this point he began a "battle" between the admirers of OpenGL (multiplatform) and Direct3D (Windows only), which many called it as another example of the tactics Microsoft. However, the other APIs of DirectX are often combined with OpenGL in many video games since OpenGL does not include all the features of DirectX (such as support for the sound or joystick). Many attempts to do so have failed.

DirectX has been used as the basis for the API console Xbox of Microsoft. The API has been developed in collaboration between Microsoft and nVidia, which developed the hardware used in the console. The Xbox API is similar to DirectX version 8.1, but it is not upgradeable unlike other technologies for console.

In 2002, Microsoft released DirectX 9 with support for use with programs more complicated than before, with pixel and vertex shader version 2.0. Microsoft has continued to update the functions of releasing DirectX shader model 3.0 in DirectX 9.0c August 2004.

With version 8 were introduced wrappers for .Net framework in order to develop directly with this platform.

It seems Wine started long before Windows 95:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wine_%28software%29

Wine can currently simulate nearly all versions of Windows, past and present.

I do use dll overrides (dll directly from Windows) for DirectSound (really DirectMusic), as well as DirectX 9 dlls. The game crashes without DirectMusic, if the sound is enabled.

The sound works normally in nearly all other games I use through Wine.
