AvP2 on Windows 8.1 Help with mouse performance

Hello, good site you have here. My question is if someone can help me with this:

I recently installed AvP2 in a new machine with Windows 8.1 and almost all looks fine, the graphics are great, the sound is good, but my mouse don't work, makes interrupted/cutted moves, it's not a graphic performance because if i move the character only using the keyboard the graphics don't jump.

I tried all the options of the compatibility wizard and nothing changes.

If anyone can help, i'll be very grateful, because the game looks AWESOME Shocked, but this mouse issue it's driving me CRAZY Cheesy

P.D.: Forgive my bad english Tongue

Hi there,

You on desktop or laptop? Try a different mouse (if you have one) - As for laptop try the touchpad? see if it's sluggish as you said....

Never heard of this error before in AvP2... but you're running 8.1 and Remember AvP2 is 13 years old.... Smiley

-- Good Luck!

oh and welcome.

Hi, thanks for answering. Well, i have not been able to solve the problem, i changed my mouse, even by a PS/2 one and there was no results.  Cry

Sorry, i did not include my specs in my previous post, i put them here in case someone has an idea.  Grin

Intel Core i7-4770 Quad Core Desktop Processor
16GB PC3-12800 DDR3 Memory
GPU NVIDIA GeForce GT 625 2GB Memory
2TB 7200rpm SATA Hard Drive
Windows 8.1 64bit

P.D.: We need a patch for AvP2 as did Sirlemonhead for AvP Gold, because i installed that title too and runs like a charm despite being even older. Shocked

Make sure you have all patches installed, and try a lower setting see if it helps.

Nope, last patch installed and i run it in 640x480 (lowest) with extralow graphics and it's the same as 1920x1080 with maximum ones.  Cry

I thought if was the small screen in the upper left side in Windows 8 for fast swap between folders and i closed it; also disabled the pin point option in the mouse menu and nothing.

Damn, can i'll never enjoy the game again? Angry

This is a strange bug in LithTech. It's caused by a high polling rate. Do you by any chance have a gaming mouse? These increase the USB polling to ridiculous rates, which ironically deteriorates "gaming" performance in AvP2. Lowering the polling rate to 125 should solve your problem. Perhaps slightly higher rates will also work but I haven't tried that. Some gaming mice have drivers that allow you to lower it. There are also tools on the Internet if yours doesn't. You can also use a simple office mouse if everything else fails Tongue.

Nope man, it's a normal optical mouse, also i tried a normal PS/2 one and it's the same thing. I don't know why, but i have the feeling that this problem has to do with how windows 8 manages the desktop with the start menu running in background. The problem is that features like the start menu and other don't even have an option to be removed. Undecided

I've noticed also that when other applications don't respond or crash, the mouse pointer gets stuck in the top left, i've also seen that moments before entering some applications that run in fullscreen, the pointer sets itself in the same place (the top left corner). Huh

You think this have to do with the problem or is it just that i'm entering in a state of hopelessness? Cheesy

Have you tried several mouses? (if you have any) maybe it has something to do with Windows 8.1... that would be my wild guess.

Maybe have a look into the mouse settings? what about other games? or just AvP2 ?

Very odd this... I've never heard of this error before,

Do you by any chance have a spare machine? with XP? or Windows 7 ? try avp2 on that with the same mouse you have and see what happens... if it is fine then the problem is the 'Actual Operating System' not the mouse it self.

- Good Luck,

I'm still pretty sure it's caused by the USB polling rate. I don't know much about Windows 8 but perhaps it uses a higher rate by default? Apparently using a USB 1.0 mouse will force the polling rate to 125. That should solve your problem if you can get your hands on one of those.

The pointer in the corner may simply be a Windows 8 quirk.

CheesySuccess men success!Cheesy

Finally I could solve this damn problem!
Thanks to what TBBC said about DPI and Polling Rates, i kept looking related issues and finally hit with an article related exactly to the problem i was experiencing.
First i directly downloaded the update for 64bit, but then i ran into a new error: "Your system don't support this upgrade",
and i thought "I'm screwed..." Cry but kept researching details on the Microsoft website where i found the module "Fix it" for that problem, ran it and it worked like a charm. Grin
I left here the links to the various related sites hoping that if someone else has the same problem in the future (which very likely by the recent situation of no more support for windows xp)
can solve it and still enjoy great titles like Aliens vs Predator 2 and Primal Hunt. Cool

The article that describes an overview of the problem:
http://www.howtogeek.com/175722/

The Microsoft page for the issue itself:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2908279

Direct link to the Microsoft Fix it module for add the route to a specific game (.exe) to get the fix (exception):
http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9844530

Thank you guys (x-M-x & TBBC), with your suggestions and ideas i was able to solve the problem. Cheesy

Hi, so, I've got the same problem, but I'm on win7 - any ideas of a solution there? Doesn't seem that MS have any similar fix available on w7.

Are you sure? maybe it's your actual mouse settings? do you use any custom gaming mouse?
