-------------------------------------------
Aliens vs. Predator 2 Linux Server
version 1.0.9.6
May 7, 2002
--------------------------------------------

Please note that this software is provided "as-is" and is not
officially supported by Monolith Productions, LithTech Inc., Fox
Interactive or Sierra Entertainment. RUNNING AVP2 ON THE LINUX
OPERATING SYSTEM IS NOT SUPPORTED BY SIERRA TECHNICAL SUPPORT.

What's New in version 1.0.9.6
-----------------------------
- [Linux] Added a command-line option to support alternate
  config files.
- Contains all changes present in the 1.0.9.6 update for Win32.

Updating from avp2linux version 1.0.9.5
---------------------------------------
1) Install the 1.0.9.6 update onto your Win32 system.
2) Copy the new AVP2L.REZ file from your Win32 system to your
Linux system, replacing the old one.
3) Copy the new avp2linux file, replacing the old one.

Requirements:
-------------

Software:

The Aliens vs. Predator 2 Linux Server binary was built on a
  Pentium-class Redhat Linux 7.1 system, using a 2.4.xx kernel,
  and glibc 2.2.2.

Other configurations *may* work, as long as pthreads are
  supported.

Hardware:

It is recommended that your system's components meet or exceed
  the following specifications:

450 mHz CPU (x86 Pentium class or higher is required)
    128 MB RAM
128 Kbps Internet connection (upload and download) for Internet
      servers

Installation (complete):
------------------------

1) Install Aliens vs. Predator 2 onto a standard Win32 system.
2) Install the latest update (1.0.9.6 as of this writing).
3) (Optional) Install Multiplayer Map Update 1.  It is found here:
   ftp://ftp3.sierra.com/pub/patches/pc/avp2_en_mp1.exe
4) Run the game, and choose Multiplayer, then Host a game.
5) Choose the Host settings you want, and start the game, then
exit. This creates your ServerData directory, containing a file
   called unnamed.txt.
6) Copy the entire game directory to a directory on the Linux
   system.*
7) Copy the avp2linux binary into the same directory as
   lithtech.exe.
8) Make sure the MULTI.REZ file is present in that directory.  If
you did a compact install, you will need to copy this file from
   the CD.
9) Start the server with ./avp2linux or ./avp2linux [configfile]

Starting the server with no parameters will cause it to use the
unnamed.txt file in the ServerData directory.  Using the second
parameter allows you to specify an alternate config file, which
also needs to exist in the ServerData directory.

*  Be careful not to alter the case of the filenames from the
default Windows installation.  If you are using Samba, the
   option in smb.conf is:

   preserve case = yes

Filenames with the incorrect case may result in "Error 103" or
"Error 110" messages when the server attempts to start.

Usage:
------

This is a non-interactive server.

Pre-game configuration is done by editing the config file in the
ServerData subdirectory.

Commands while the server is running may only be sent by a player
in the game who has server control.

The server is shut down with CTRL-C.

Security Notes:
---------------
The Aliens vs. Predator 2 Linux Server WILL open a port on your
machine.  The default is 27888, and it may be changed in the
Settings section of the unnamed.txt file.

DO NOT RUN THIS SERVER AS ROOT.

It is recommended that this server be run as a user with minimal
privilege (ex: nobody).

Finally, if you are not the administrator of the system, please get
permission before running this application.

Mod Notes:
----------

The Aliens vs. Predator 2 Linux server requires its resources to be
in rez-file format.  It will not work properly with resources that
are unpacked into a directory on the system.

Lucifer asked me to register and linked me to comment my results here.

After testing a bunch of different Wine versions with PlayOnLinux and different video settings I've got an extremely fluid running AVP2:PH in WINE.

While testing I left ingame graphics settings to best at 1600x1200 32-bit. I'm running off a Thinkpad W700 C2E X9100  @ 3.06GHz, and an Nvidia Quadro FX 2700 dedicated GPU with driver version 340.76 on Gentoo linux CK-sources linux kernel version 3.18.3. I have PlayOnLinux 4.2.6 installed.

I followed the torrent's instructions up to the widescreen fix that I did not install and the windows 8 mouse fix that I did not install. I'd imagine the widescreen fix wouldn't be a problem but I wanted to be sure I could get vanilla as much possible running first.

I've installed AVP2:PH with community patches in a WINE x64 prefix, but I'd assume that it would work with a 32-bit Prefix. the version I got it to work with was WINE 1.3.29. I installed Direct X version 9, directmusic, and xinput(DX9 is a must, not sure about the other two being required) via the install components tab in the PlayOnLinux configure window. Under the Display Tab:

GLSL Support:                           Enabled
Direct Draw Renderer:                opengl
Video Memory Size:    (amount you gfx card has in my case 512)
offscreen rendering mode:           backbuffer
render target mode:                    default
multisampling:                            default
strict draw order:                         default

under wine configuration
Application tab
windows version:      win98

Graphics tab
x      automatically capture mouse in fullscreen windows
x      allow windows manager to decorate windows(doesn't matter but I had it enabled)
x      allow window manager to control the windows
x      emulate virtual desktop
desktop size (set to whatever res you'll run the game at)

vertex shader support:     hardware
x allow pixel shader

for the mouse polling issue I did this
echo "8" > /sys/module/usbhid/parameters/mousepoll
unplug and replug you mouse back in to apply frequency changes

to change back the frequency to you preference follow this chart
Hz      ms
1000      1
500      2
250      4
125      8
100      10
more info on mouse polling in linux https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/mouse_polling_rate

I also turned off native mouse accel with
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-mouse-acceleration.conf
Section "InputClass"
     Identifier "My Mouse"
     MatchIsPointer "yes"
     Option "AccelerationProfile" "-1"
     Option "AccelerationScheme" "none"
     Option "AccelSpeed" "-1"
EndSection

more info on mouse accel in Xorghttps://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mouse_acceleration

I did not have any window compositor running.

with these settings I was able to get the game running and actually playable without noticeable stuttering, although changing video options would cause the Virtual desktop to go black, restarting the game would have the settings applied.

I tested Predator vision, night vision and no graphical hiccups.

any other settings that can boost performance let me know.

exist a minimod maked by Kenny called "Vision Mode Fix." It is a really small mod that acts as a patch for players who experience black screens when switching through alien night vision and predator nav vision modes. The black screens are due to modern video cards not supporting the invert colors in AvP2's vision modes. This mod is made for singleplayer usage only, as you will not be able to join servers with it.

Name: HQP - High Resolution Textures
Version: 2.0

*******

1. Description
"High Quality Pack 2.0 - High Resolution Textures" is the bigest mod I ever made. As you can see on the screenshots, mod adds about 500 high resolution textures to the multiplayer part of the game. Well, singleplayer is affected too but not as much as MP. I was making this mod more than a year, and its almost 10 times bigger than previous version. Its not perfect however. Textures I made at the begining are not so nice as the latest ones, and stuff like that. But it still looks better than original ones, I hope Smiley

theoretically it would be possible to clone or use part of the binary file for AVP2 normal?
I'm sure that would be a real Pandora's box for a programmer.

or it may just be a big waste of time ?
