As for animation, I believe most of animations are just lucky-to-look-good rips of AVP2 animations (made with ModelEdit, for example, as far as I remember, Medpack throwing animation is a part of Hacking Tool animation) + some VIPMod animations (old animation but new model and textures, made by Polar) + manually edited/merged animations (made with my converter tool, which converts ABC models into text-like LTA format). P.S. I could share converter tool with you if you are interested. It's alpha version, but it mostly works.

The only other notable mod teams that I recall were AxP and Projam. Yes, please send me the converter tool. I'm decent with ModelEdit but it is lacking in features. I never did fully grasp 3dsmax or Milkshape 3D. Milkshape3d has a problem with the bones/skeleton and losing animations if I remember correctly.
